| Specialty Chemical Company Enables Knowledge Sharing and Intellectual Property Re-Use |

Objective
A specialty chemical company recognized for developing, manufacturing, and supplying customers with innovative ingredients wanted to improve knowledge management within and across functions. The management team realized that it needed to enhance information flow and coordinate activities across globally dispersed sites to improve product development efficiency and effectiveness. The company wanted to develop a knowledge management solution that would help integrate technical and R&D functions, provide common standards and systems for the management of technical knowledge and product-related information, and streamline project collaboration across the company.
Solution
Through interviews, analysis, and industry benchmarking, Kalypso helped the client understand and document specific business and technical requirements. This was achieved by establishing a diagnostic assessment of existing systems, processes, and resources through the extensive use of Kalypso’s PLM Capabilities Diagnostic. The Kalypso team then analyzed and researched solution providers, building vendor profiles and creating a short list of finalists based on the client’s requirements in three domains: Formula Management, Search, and Document Management. This work also included developing an RFI/RFP distributed to selected vendors, and building a business case associated with recommendations and organization of a two-phase vendor selection process. Finally, Kalypso assisted the client in defining a strategy to develop a technical knowledge network to better integrate its global Research & Development and Technical Services communities.
Results
Following Kalypso’s recommendations, the client decided to leverage a technology platform aimed at deploying a combined Search and Formula Management solution to improve New Product and New Application Development processes. During the first phase, the client selected the technology vendors. Kalypso is currently helping the client to redesign processes and has started the planning phase to prepare for the solution’s global design and implementation.
